Physical Education

Welcome to our PE page

PE is such a vital aspect of a child's education supporting not only a child's physical health but also their mental health and well-being.  For some children PE is an enjoyable distraction from the classroom while for others it is an opportunity to shine at sport and games.  For all children, it is a vital engagement with healthy living, exercise, teamwork,  and physical development and control.  School PE is the breeding ground for the next generation of elite athletes but it is also the door to active, healthy and long lives.

How we teach PE

All children are provided with two hours of curriculum PE a week. We utilise a PE resource called Complete PE. This is a comprehensive and detailed set of planning and resources to deliver exciting, effective and engaging PE lessons. To view our long term planning for PE, please click below:

In addition to the children's PE lessons, we also promote active break and lunch times.  Different sports equipment is available for both team and solo activities and the children are encouraged to participate in the 'Daily Mile' challenge every day.

Cleveland Schools Sports Partnership

We are a member of the Cleveland School Sport Partnership. This offers our children access to high quality sport competitions and festivals with other primary schools across our local area.

The Sports Partnership also provides excellent professional development opportunities for our staff to enhance and improve their own subject knowledge and confidence in teaching PE. This includes external training courses and PE specialists from the partnership working in our school alongside our staff to support and develop their skills and confidence to teach high quality PE lessons.

Swimming

Drowning is the third most common cause of accidental death in children and while some children learn to swim outside of school, for others primary school will be the only opportunity they have to learn these vital lifesaving skills.  The National Curriculum recognises the importance of teaching our young people swimming and water safety and includes three key outcomes all children are expected to achieve by the end of year six:

At Lockwood we support these outcomes by offerring swimming lessons in all keystage two classes and not just in Year 6.

Early Year PE

Physical activity is vital in children’s all-round development, enabling them to pursue happy, healthy and active lives. Gross and fine motor skills develop incrementally throughout early childhood, starting with sensory explorations and the development of a child’s strength, co-ordination and positional awareness, initially through tummy time and then crawling through to active play and interactions with objects, adults and their peers. Through play and games both indoors and outdoors, adults can support children to develop their core strength, stability, balance, spatial awareness, co-ordination and agility. Gross motor skills provide the foundation for developing healthy bodies and social and emotional well-being.  Being active in early childhood also provides a vital spark to a child's physical literacy - their relationship with movement and physical activity throughout life.

In our Early Years setting you will see active children spinning, swinging, twisting, rolling, crawling, pushing, pulling, jumping, balancing, and climbing  for the majority of the day as theydevelop their fine and gross motor skills.

PE and Sports Premium Funding for Primary Schools

The Government provides each primary school with specific funding for PE and sport. It is  jointly provided by the Department for Education, Health & Culture, Media and Sport and is paid directly to the schools to spend on improving the quality of sport and PE for all children.

As part of the funding agreement, schools need to publish information on how they spend their allocation.  You can find Lockwood Primary's funding reports below.  If you would like any more information about teaching and learning in PE or the Sports Premium funding, please do not hesitate to contact the school office.
